Air Force and Marine Corps Paternity Policies The Air Force requires new fathers to use paternity leave within 60 days of their childs birth. In some circumstances, at a commanders discretion, leave may be used up to 90 days after the child is born. For Marines, paternity leave must be requested within 25 days of the childs birth. If a Marine is deployed at the time, he may be able to have his leave authorized outside that 25-day window, if approved by his commander. As with the Navy and Army policies, paternity leave is only granted to airmen and Marines who are married and whose wife gives birth to their child.

Big Brother magazine itself and what this movie talks about: the opportunity was given to me to have absolute creative freedom. To make whatever magazine I wanted to make. And once I got a taste of that freedom, I could never go back. If it didnât lead to Jackass, I donât know what I wouldâve done. If the magazine folded, it wouldâve been impossible to go back. It was a rare opportunity at a young age to get complete freedom to do whatever we wanted to do. That was an absolute blessing and I have tried to make the most of that in my life since then. You have created and produced everything from sports to crazy antics and even a safety video for American Airlines. How do you measure your success as it comes to you?That is a good question! How do I measure successâ¦? I put everything I am doing into each project, and sometimes they come out better than others for sure. I know when I feel good about w hat we did, and shoot, I donât know how to give you a good answer to that. There are two versions of success: the ones that other people like and the one that you know you like. Basically, I like everything that I do. And I keep at it until I do. Air Force Assignment System Air Force Assignment System Air Force assignments are governed by Air Force Instruction 36-2110. Qualified people with the needed skills must be in the right job at the right time to meet the Air Force mission. At the same time, the Air Force has a responsibility to keep attuned to the demands placed on its members resulting from personnel tempo, a quality-of-life metric that measures the amount of time an individual spends away from his or her home station for operational and training purposes, such as temporary duty or designated dependent-restricted assignments. Consequently, the Air Force classifies and assigns people worldwide as equitably as possible to ensure a high state of readiness. While the primary consideration in selecting personnel for reassignment is the memberâs qualifications to accomplish the mission, the Air Force also considers additional factors. How the Air Force Determines Assignments The Air Force assigns members without regard to color, race, religious preference (except chaplains), national origin, ethnic background, age, marital status (except military couples), spouseâs employment, education or volunteer service activities of spouse, or gender (except as provided for by statute or other policies). The Special Experience Identifier (SEI) system complements the assignment process and is used when specific experience or training is critical to the job and no other means is appropriate or available. The SEI system is also used to rapidly identify personnel to meet unique circumstances, contingency requirements, or other critical needs. Manpower positions are coded with an SEI to identify positions that require or provide unique experiences or qualifications. While some assignments require special experience, the vast majority of Air Force enlisted assignment slots do not. Positions often require members assigned to have access to a specified level of classified information. Selection for these jobs may be necessary from among members who currently have access or can be granted access immediately. Volunteers Selected First Within a group of qualified members who meet the minimum eligibility criteria for PCS selection, volunteers are selected first. Non-volunteers qualified to fill a requirement who meet the minimum PCS eligibility criteria are selected ahead of qualified volunteers who do not. For example, time on station (TOS) is a PCS eligibility requirement. A qualified volunteer who meets the minimum TOS requirement is considered first in order of longest on the station. Next, the qualified non-volunteer who meets the TOS requirement in the order of longest on station and finally the qualified volunteer who does not meet the TOS requirement may be considered. First-term Airmen serving an initial enlistment of four or more years may not be given more than two assignments in different locations following initial basic and skill training during their first four years of service, regardless of tour length. First-term Airmen who make two PCS moves are permitted an additional PCS in conjunction with an approved humanitarian reassignment, a join-spouse assignment, as a volunteer, or when the PCS is a mandatory move (such as returning from a tour at the end of the prescribed tour length). Availability and Deferment A member is considered available for reassignment on the first day of the month in which theyre available. Deferments may be authorized when possible in most grades and jobs to maintain an equitable assignment system and also support the need for stability in certain organizations or functions. Deferments are normally approved to preclude a memberâs PCS while theyre being evaluated for suitability or during a period of observation or rehabilitation. Deferments also exist for such things as completion of an educational program or degree, to serve as a witness for a court-martial, when accused in a court-martial, to control the roster, Article 15 punishment, base of preference (BOP) program, retraining or humanitarian reasons. Humanitarian Assignment Policy The humanitarian policy provides reassignment or deferment for Air Force members to assist them in resolving severe short-term problems involving a family member. The problem must be resolvable within a reasonable period of time and the members presence must be considered absolutely essential to resolve the problem. Family members under the humanitarian program are limited to a spouse, children, parents, parents-in-law, and those persons who have served in loco parentis (one who has exercised parental rights and responsibilities in place of a natural parent). While brothers and sisters are not included in the definition of family member for humanitarian consideration, a request involving a brothers or sisters terminal illness often is considered as an exception to the policy. Exceptional Family Member Policy The Exceptional Family Member Policy (EFMP) is a separate and distinct program from the humanitarian policy. This program is based on a members need for special medical or educational care for a spouse or child that is required long-term, possibly permanently. It is not a base-of-choice program as assignment decisions are based on manning needs of the Air Force at locations where a members special medical or educational needs for a spouse or child can be met. Under the EFMP, a member may receive a reassignment if a need arises for specialized care that cannot be met where they are currently assigned. A deferment from an assignment may be provided for a newly identified condition if the members presence is considered essential. The purpose of such a deferment is to allow the member time to establish a special medical treatment program or educational program for the exceptional family member. When granted, the initial period of deferment is usually 12 months, after which a member may be reconsidered for PCS if otherwise eligible. Military Couples Assignments Each member of a military couple serves in his or her own right. This means military couples must fulfill the obligations inherent to all Air Force members they are considered for assignments to fill valid manning requirements and must perform duties that require the skills in which they are trained. Provided these criteria are met, military couples may be considered for assignment where they can maintain a joint residence. In very limited circumstances a member may ask for a voluntary PCS and agree to pay all expenses involved. Also, travel time is charged as ordinary leave. Members must meet all PCS eligibility criteria for the type of move requested. Permissive PCS may not be granted based solely on the willingness of a member to move at his or her own expense. The voluntary stabilized base assignment program provides airmen a stabilized tour in exchange for volunteering for an assignment to a historically hard-to-fill location. CONUS-Isolated Station Assignments Normal personnel support facilities (military or civilian) arenât available at certain continental U.S. (CONUS) stations or within a reasonable distance. This creates a degree of hardship for personnel assigned to these stations. To prevent involuntary assignment at these locations for long periods, the Air Force established a minimum 15-month tour for single and unaccompanied personnel and a minimum 24-month tour for accompanied personnel. Individuals assigned to a CONUS-isolated station may request reassignment upon completion of the tour. Extended Long On Station Tour Length The Extended Long On Station Tour Length (ELT) volunteer program applies to airmen who volunteer for PCS OS to a long-tour location (one where the accompanied tour length is 24 months or more and the unaccompanied tour length is more than 15 months). Airmen who volunteer for an ELT agree to serve the standard tour length plus an additional 12 months. Educational Deferment Airmen who have not yet been selected for a PCS may request a deferment from assignment selection when they have nearly completed high school, vocational program, or college degree requirements. Requests for deferment are processed through the education office (which will confirm eligibility). Airmen may be deferred up to 9 months to complete high school or up to 12 months to complete a college degree. Dependent Care and Adoption All military members ensure arrangements are made for the care of their dependents when they must be separated due to TDY or PCS. Military couples with dependents and single-member sponsors are expected to fulfill their military obligations on the same basis as other members. They are eligible for worldwide duty and all assignments for which they qualify. To ensure all members remain available for worldwide duty, they must have workable plans to provide parent-like care for their dependents as outlined in AFI 36-2908. Members who cannot or will not meet military commitments due to family needs will be considered for discharge. Members adopting children are given a limited time to complete the official adoption process. Individuals may be authorized deferment during the four-month period following the date a child is officially placed in the memberâs home. Family members (parents, spouse, brothers, sisters, and children) will not be assigned to the same unit or function where one member may hold a command or supervisory position over the other. PCS Cancellation Once a member is selected for PCS and orders are published, cancellation of the assignment could impose a hardship on the member. A PCS should not normally be canceled within 60 days of the projected departure date unless the member cannot be effectively used at the projected location. Cancellation may be authorized by the assignment OPR (Office of Primary Responsibility). If the member indicates a hardship will exist as a result of the cancellation, then the MPF will direct the member to prepare a written statement containing the details of the hardship. The statement should be coordinated through the unit commander to the MPF. Cancellation Requested by Member Airmen who are selected for PCS, TDY, or training and who do not want to participate in an event may elect to request retirement under the 7seven-day option provision (assuming they have more than 20 years of service and are retirement eligible). Airmen who elect to retire are ineligible for promotion consideration and are ineligible for an extension of enlistment or reenlistment, except as authorized in conjunction with a request for retirement. Aside from the seven-day option provision, airmen who do not have the minimum required retainability for the event may be eligible to decline the assignment. Declining an overseas assignment by refusing to obtain the required retainability usually results in immediate re-enlistment ineligibility, which usually results in becoming ineligible for promotion.

Why Smart People Try to Fail at Work - The Muse Why Smart People Try to Fail at Work Whatâs your proudest failure? Does that question surprise you? Itâs certainly not a common one in professional circles, where our focus tends to be on quantifiable success. While achieving desirable results and succeeding matters, if we consider how failure is inextricably linked with success, itâs a bit surprising we donât discuss it more- beyond the classic interview question, âTell me a time you failed.â Putting it in the context of pride is different. When you get to a point where you can feel proud of a time you failed, you stop trying to hide or minimize defeat as if it doesnât happen to everyone. You can discuss it as a learning experience in a performance review or job interview without feeling embarrassed. Talking about failure in this way means recognizing that true growth comes with some risk. Iâm not suggesting that you embark on a project with plans of watching it go up in flames so you have a story to tell in your next job interview. Iâm saying that when it happens, donât shy away from it or try to hide it under the rug. Youâre human, after all, so face your fear of failure and change the way you view the experience. Still not convinced? Consider some of the benefits below, and how you can make the most of it when it happens: Failure Means Youâre Growing Five years ago I attended a training workshop for career coaches led by career expert and author Dr. Katherine Brooks. She shared a sentiment that stayed with me: If you donât occasionally have a major flop, you arenât trying anything new, and, consequently, youâre not doing your best. To avoid the trap of settling for whatâs easy, you must push yourself beyond your comfort zone, and that means sometimes registering defeat. You may embarrass yourself or disappoint someone. Those aches and pains indicate growth. I co-led a new training on my campus recently. It wasnât perfect, and that ate at me. I certainly couldâve chalked it up as a failure. But you know what? It was better than some previous trainings on the same topic, and it makes us closer to an overarching goal than we were before. Plus, not only did it provide a campus benefit, but it also gave me new knowledge and experience. Had I played it safe, it would have been a loss all the way around. Failure Means Youâre Producing Social psychologist Dean Simonton, knows a little bit about genius, having studied creative geniuses for well over two decades. He discovered that geniuses are, to put it rather simplistically, busy. They churn out lots of material, some of which leads to great success and some of which lands in the trash (fails). Simonton points to the work of Pablo Picasso as an example in a Scientific American Mind piece, noting that Picasso created many sketches prior to the painting Guernica. Some of the sketches led nowhere while some led to further developments in finalizing the painting we know today. While not all of the sketches directly influenced the final piece, each one played an important role in the creative process. Without all of that work- even the work that didnât directly contribute to the final painting- there would be no Guernica. Whatever your field of expertise, to create successful work, you must first create. Period. Like Picasso, not every piece of work you produce will be an award-winning masterpiece, but much of it will help you pay the bills, progress in your career, and build your portfolio as you pursue greater and greater achievements. With Failure Comes Insight Failure, as painful as it can be, is an opportunity to analyze what went wrong so you can come roaring back better and stronger. Consider this example from my own experience. Iâm not naturally a bossy person. A couple of years ago I was charged with chairing a committee, and I attempted to get input from the other members about our starting point and strategy. I mostly got blank looks in response. I couldâve continued with my overly-inclusive approach, and we wouldâve accomplished nothing. Instead, I recognized that my approach flopped, and I adapted. I set a meeting schedule and the agenda for the meetings, and then I began asking explicitly when I needed help with something. The committee just wrapped up a major task that we never wouldâve finished if I hadnât acknowledged that my initial approach was ineffective and adjusted accordingly. Instead of running or hiding when something goes awry, dive in to figure out how you can improve. What did you learn about the process? The people involved? Yourself? How can you use this awareness to improve? To take things even further, consider seeking feedback from others who can help you consider improvements not on your radar. Not every failure will be a biggie or result in profound insight that turns into tremendous success. Thatâs fine. Use those unremarkable fails as a chance to remember that youâre an imperfect human. Before you go too far down the road of, âBut wait- perfection is necessary! I donât want to be operated on by a surgeon whoâs only successful 80% of the time,â let me say that I agree. There are certainly situations where there is little to no margin for error. But consider this: Where did that surgeonâs knowledge come from? The advancements we enjoy today come from a long line of trial and error, success and failure. So yes, on the operating table you must be 100%. But if we hold that standard to all people all the time, we stop advancing. See the difference? Youâre not operating 100% of the time, so stop acting like it and allow me to ask again, what is your proudest failure? If you donât have an answer, you have some work to do. When you fear it, it becomes your master, sapping your energy and creativity. When you can look back on defeat with pride because it played an important role in making you the badass you are today, you become unstoppable. Yellen is one of Brownâs most famous alumni.In her Friday remarks, Yellen said women are still too underrepresented in the labor force, and when they are in the workforce, they still face âsignificantâ earning gaps with men and prohibitive work-life balances that hold them back from career advancement.Yellen warned that âif these obstacles persist, we will squander the potential of many of our citizens and incur a substantial loss to the productive capacity of our economy at a time when the aging of the population and weak productivity growth are already weighing on economic growth.ââThe only real choicesâ for early working womenFor the early class of 1919, Brown women had li mited opportunities, as Yellen pointed out: âTeaching. You could teach. You could be a lab technician. Or you could go into office work and be a secretary. Those were the only real choices,â as one 1919 female graduate noted.Men were hostile to women taking jobs in the 19th and 20th centuries as womenâs participation in the U.S. workforce increased.Yellen showed that hostility in action with the story of Brown alumnae Margery Leonard who was told to drop out of law school by her professor. When she refused, he forced her âto recite the details of rape and seduction cases before her jeering, stomping classmatesâ in class.After World War II, women were pushed out of jobs for returning soldiers. Yellenâs own family was affected by this; Yellen believed her husbandâs aunt, mathematician Betty Stafford Hirschfelder, âwas denied opportunities and greater success simply because she was a woman.âAgainst that backdrop, Yellen, 70, said she matriculated at Brown when women were more welcomed: âI enrolled at Brown fully planning to attend graduate school and have a career, as did many of my classmates in the Class of 1967.âYellen slowly saw women gain rights. In 1974, women no longer had to apply for credit with a male co-signer; under the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, they gained the independence to apply under their own name.Childcare policies need to improveThe number of women participating in the U.S. workforce has stalled. Yellen noted that the U.S. fell to 17th place out of 22 âadvanced economiesâ in female labor participation numbers in 2010. Additionally, women are earning 17% less than men on average.Yellen highlighted that what would fix this gender gap is more flexible work policies: âTop jobs in fields such as law and business require longer workweeks and penalize taking time off.âThe inability to take leave âdisproportionatelyâ hurts women who âbear the lionâs share of domestic and child-rearing responsibilities,â she said.

How Overtime Pay is Calculated How Overtime Pay is Calculated Some employees are entitled to receive overtime pay when they work extra hours. These employees are generally termed ânon-exemptâ â" which means that theyâre not exempt from the overtime pay rules governed by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). (âExemptâ employees are not subject to FLSA overtime regulations.) Eligibility is based on weekly earnings and hours worked. Overtime pay is calculated based on a 40-hour workweek and overtime pay for eligible employees is required for any hours worked over those 40 hours. In some cases, overtime pay rules are also governed by state regulations in addition to the FLSA. In states where an employee is subject to both state and federal overtime laws, overtime is paid according to the standard that will provide the higher amount of pay. Check your State Department of Labor website for information on overtime pay requirements in your location. Employers must follow both federal and state law to stay compliant. What Is Overtime Pay? Workers currently earning less than $455 per week, which is $23,660 per year, are currently guaranteed federal overtime protection. There are exemptions for highly compensated employees who customarily and regularly perform any one or more of the exempt duties or responsibilities of an executive, administrative, or professional employee. According to the Department of Labor, employees covered by the FLSA must receive overtime pay for hours worked in excess of 40 in a workweek at a rate not less than time and one-half their regular rates of pay. Double Time Pay Double time is a rate of pay double the usual amount a person receives for normal hours worked. So, if your normal rate of pay was $11.00 an hour, double time pay would be $22.00 per hour. Double time is sometimes paid for working on federal holidays or when hours work exceeding the normal workday. When Double Time Is Paid There are no federal laws that require an employer to pay double time for overtime worked. The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) has no requirement for double time pay. However, state laws may provide for overtime or double time. For example, in California, double the employees regular rate of pay must be paid for all hours worked in excess of 12 hours in any workday and for all hours worked in excess of eight on the seventh consecutive day of work in a workweek. Check with your state Department of Labor for rules for your location. Double time is most commonly an agreement between an employer and employee (or the employees representative). An agreement for double time may also be itemized in a labor agreement or union contract. How Overtime Pay Is Calculated Overtime pay is not automatically awarded for work completed on Saturdays, Sundays, holidays, or regular days of rest unless hours worked on those days push the weekly total over 40 hours. All non-exempt employees who work over 40 hours during a workweek must be paid at a rate of at least one and one-half times (typically referred to as time and a half) the employees regular hourly rate. So, a worker earning $10 per hour, who worked a 50-hour week would be entitled to 10 overtime hours at $15 per hour. Overtime pay applies to non-exempt salaried employees as well as hourly employees. For example, a non-exempt salaried employee who is paid $600 per week would be guaranteed at least $22.50 per hour for each hour worked over 40 ($600/40 15 X 1.5 $22.5 per overtime hour). Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, an employees workweek is a fixed and regularly recurring period of 168 hours â" seven consecutive 24-hour periods. The workweek can start on any day or time as long as the hours are consistently calculated for that same period. Hours cant be averaged over a two or four-week pay period. The Act does permit employers to designate a different workweek for different classes of employees. Hospitals and residential care facilities are allowed to calculate overtime based on a period of 14 consecutive days instead of the otherwise required adherence to a seven-consecutive-day period. For example, a hospital employee might work 30 hours in week one of the period and 50 hours in week two of the period for a total of 80 hours. This worker would not be entitled to any overtime since she did not average more than 40 hours per week. Non-exempt employees can be paid on a weekly, bi-weekly, semi-monthly, or monthly basis, and overtime is normally paid during the period that it was earned. Employees Not Entitled to Overtime Some employees, known as exempt employees, are not entitled to overtime pay. To be classified as exempt, a worker must be earning over $455 per week. That amount may differ in locations where states laws regulate overtime pay. The rules under the Fair Labor Standards Act also have overtime exemptions for highly compensated employees who customarily and regularly perform any one or more of the exempt duties or responsibilities of an executive, administrative, or professional employee. Many other categories of workers are exempt from overtime pay such as taxicab drivers, truck drivers, salespeople, radio and television station employees in small markets, motion picture theater employees, sugar processing workers, and seamen.
